Fifa 10 (click to resize),

developer: EA Canada, publisher: Electronic Arts, platforms: PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, PC, PS2, Nintendo DS, PSP, iPhone OS, N-Gage, Mobile Phone

Electronic Arts’ yearly try and error phases now seem to yield fruit as Fifa 10 is a coherent, nice looking and pleasantly lively football experience. Even if the changes and updates towards last year’s edition seem to be minor for the untrained eye, Fifa 10 took all the criticism to heart and consequently stamped out frustrating gameplay situations and improved the physical interaction between players and the overall behaviour of the players on the pitch.

Players now move, behave and position themselves more realistically than ever before. On attack, players analyze space more effectively, curve their runs in an attempt to stay onside, create passing lanes naturally, and drive for more variety in attacking options. On defense, new concepts like position priority enable defenders to multitask so dangerous spaces left open by teammates out of position are covered. Plus, slide tackle targeting, press marking, and better-urgency clearance logic provide new options that make defending a more challenging tactical skill. In goal, improvements and refinements to goalkeeper intelligence result in a more responsive and powerful rushing system and much more realistic saves. This sounds all too good to be true… and it’s a pity that it only sounds that good as in reality these things are mostly controlled by an AI that is just too artifical and not at all as intelligent as the developers hoped it to be. The gameplay weirdly seems to be entrapped in some kind of grid. Not even the new 360 degree controls can gild the fact that Fifa gameplay still is forseeable and feels strangely ’scripted’. Again it’s too easy to learn attack patterns that lead to simple goals. The game severely lacks hazard, luck, chance and accident which makes it some what formulaic. Another drawback is the nonexistent heaviness, energy and power. There’s not much of thrill and holding breath when Hitz the Hammer unwraps a 130kmh strike out of 30m and the ball gently weeps into the goalies gloves.

Fifa 10 clearly offers the best gameplay in the series’ long history, but minor (and for the PES-corner major) flaws as the dodgy AI and lack of real control and power taint the overall impression. Nonetheless it’s a great football game, yet maybe a bit too polished.

Review: Need for Speed: Shift

Need for Speed: Shift (click to resize),

developer: Slightly Mad Studios, publisher: Electronic Arts, platforms: PS3, PSP, PC, Xbox 360, Mobile phone, iPhone OS

After last year’s disastrous instalment Need for Speed: Undercover, the Need for Speed franchise finally experiences a necessary reorientation. Electronic Arts eventually lets go of this outrageous illegal downtown road races and trashy wild hot pursuits with bloody coppers and tune in to some challenging and more simulative approach on motorsports.

Nonetheless it’s a damn pity that real racing game aficionados beyond the NFS age or IQ threshold of 16 years respectively IQ70 will quickly realize that there’s not that much of substance behind the howling engines of uber soaped up HP-muscle cars. Therefore Need for Speed: Shift leaves me relatively deflated an scatterbrained. The game simply fails to present itself as a coherent racing simulator. With its half-baked tuning options, insanely daft AI and its fiddly (drift) controls, it’d just epicly fail against the top dogs like Gran Turismo Prologue or Forza 3. But it’s not even a fun focused arcade racer as there are first and foremost better arcade racers out there. The utter bad thing now is that Need for Speed: Shift even fails in placing itself as fully functional hybrid combining the best features of both worlds realistic true-to-life simulation and rather action-oriented arcade. Yet this would be absolutely obsolete as fierce competitors as Racedriver: Grid already own the target group.

The emerging questions now is why Electronic Arts seems to desperately freaks out and release such a bland, alarmingly uninspired, as regards of content inconsequent and from a technical point of view not up to date product on the hotly contested market for racing games? I rather drive my all geared up GT and kiss the next best alleytree. This would at least have some impact on me… I think.

Paramore – Brand new Eyes

paramore brand new eyesIt’s not as if Paramore haven’t been feeling the pressure after their immense success of their breakthrough album ‘RIOT!’, but ‘Brand new Eyes’ succeeds in presenting the band as a stronger, more focused and altogether more consistent band. ‘Brand new Eyes’ could be called their own ‘The Bends’. Produced by Grammy award winning Rob Cavallo (Green Day, My Chemical Romance, Avril Lavigne)] the sound quality obviously remains ultra-clean, makes the listening experience relatively risk-free and also brings attention to the fact that there’s not a lot of groundbreaking or experiments being made. It could have been Flyleaf, but it still remains miles ahead of their peers. Sure, the array is still all you would expect from flame-haired frontwoman Hayley Williams’ combo as it mainly involves painting by numbers through the captivating fast paced opening track (‘Careful’), palpably blatant singalongs (‘Looking up’), heartwarming ballads ['The only Exception' (probably the best Coldplay song since 'Parachutes'), 'Misguided Ghosts' (indicating the imminent split of the band?)], the pretentious uber ‘Twilight’ soundtrack song (‘Decode’), the standard so-so single (‘Ignorance’) and some fillers (‘Feeling sorry’, ‘All I wanted’). It’s all formulaic, but I don’t think you can await any more compelling mainstream targeted pop/punk this sales period. See for how long it’ll last…

Celeste (click to resize)

It’s pitch-dark, except for some strange red flickering lights. Dense the fog and as dense the noise. Celeste were coal mining and devastating Leipzig’s punk vespiary Zoro with their well grounded, sincere and overly raw and ruffian storm and stress black metalesque sludge. Celeste say: ‘We try to get darker and darker, but maybe one day it this will not be possible anymore. Then we will just stop.’ Let’s hope they won’t as this concert was more than a mere hardcore show, it was a catharsis bringing you back down to earth. Feels so good, feels so good… l’hyène et les trois paresseux.

Needless to say that you can download their records for free at Denovali.

Jesse Rose – Presents ‘Playing Around Again’

playing around again coverAt a time house music was the hottest shit ever until it rapidly turned into crap music that whores listen to when they want to pick up a horny wog guy. Luckily a lone and unpretentious ambassador of quality house, Jesse Rose, with his label Made to Play as to be one of the labels at the forefront of the current house music scene, continues to push the boundaries with worldwide acclaim. Techy, sometimes edgy fidget house ushers in a renaissance of house music and personally I’m more than glad that it turned out that way as the latest label compilation „Playing around again“ with momentous tracks of Oliver $, Jan Driver and Idiotproof, well crafted in a captivating mix by new label recruits Zombie Disco Squad is hotter than blue blazes. Let’s hope it won’t boil for too good, otherwise the whores will come back…

district 9

‘This out of the blue project just nonchalantly throws away too many opportunities and unfortunately fails and fizzles on its own ambition as its thought-provoking rascist conflict with alien crustacea refugees rather opens out into mere actionist bespoken razzmatazz than in a clever social criticism. Even the pseudodocumentary The Office’esque shaky cam can’t change tack as the plot’s getting increasingly perforated by each further exploding grunt.

The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas

‘The boy in the striped pyjamas’ presents a very delicate view on the holocaust by featuring a family drama around a nazi family and the Judenfrage seen through the eyes of an 8-year old. Unfortunately the flick just doesn’t work out as I could be as it is as distant that it could well be misunderstood as an obviosuly too clichéd and neokitschy fiction trivializing the facts given. Better head for the impressive 1988’s animation ‘Grave of the Fireflies’,  one of the most powerful anti-war movies ever made.

If fricking Caroline were’nt such a prepubescent bitch and her miserable parents were just a tiny bit more affectionate towards their eccentric drama-queening daughter I may have like it more besides the fact that it is insanely well crafted.

tropa de elite

Yeah. it is poorly structured, and yes, it is overly brutal, scornful and pervy. But no, it’s definetly not a bad movie. Like its brother in arms ‘City of God’, ‘Tropa de Elite’ features the desperate and fatalistic ‘civil war’ in the favelas of Rio and succeeds in NOT swinging the moral hammer. It’d be so easy to judge…
