district 9

‘This out of the blue project just nonchalantly throws away too many opportunities and unfortunately fails and fizzles on its own ambition as its thought-provoking rascist conflict with alien crustacea refugees rather opens out into mere actionist bespoken razzmatazz than in a clever social criticism. Even the pseudodocumentary The Office’esque shaky cam can’t change tack as the plot’s getting increasingly perforated by each further exploding grunt.

The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas

‘The boy in the striped pyjamas’ presents a very delicate view on the holocaust by featuring a family drama around a nazi family and the Judenfrage seen through the eyes of an 8-year old. Unfortunately the flick just doesn’t work out as I could be as it is as distant that it could well be misunderstood as an obviosuly too clichéd and neokitschy fiction trivializing the facts given. Better head for the impressive 1988’s animation ‘Grave of the Fireflies’,  one of the most powerful anti-war movies ever made.

If fricking Caroline were’nt such a prepubescent bitch and her miserable parents were just a tiny bit more affectionate towards their eccentric drama-queening daughter I may have like it more besides the fact that it is insanely well crafted.

tropa de elite

Yeah. it is poorly structured, and yes, it is overly brutal, scornful and pervy. But no, it’s definetly not a bad movie. Like its brother in arms ‘City of God’, ‘Tropa de Elite’ features the desperate and fatalistic ‘civil war’ in the favelas of Rio and succeeds in NOT swinging the moral hammer. It’d be so easy to judge…

crips and bloods

Stacy Peralta’s so-so finger-wagging background study documentation about feuding american gangs Crips & Bloods in South Central L.A. features mainly british bands (Amon Tobin, Portishead, Massive Attack, The Cinematic Orchestra, aso.) in its soundtrack? I like, but it kills the vibe.

The Tracey Fragments

the tracey fragments

This unexceptional and uninteresting story of a self-pitying, deep down and dirty and heavy-bitching borderline-personality teenager (Ellen Page, oh, the critics get boners) verges on being unwatchable as the director decides to bombard the hipster audience (hence the OST by Broken Social Scene, how cliché) with gimmicky extraneous images in first 4, then 20 and eventually up to a quadrillion split-screens instead of telling a fairly decent story about what’s underneath the storm and the horse.

Let the Right One in

let the right one in

A slow-paced vampire film with as much heart as gore and at once a devastating, curiously uplifting inhuman drama and a superbly crafted genre exercise. Actually it is a horror film, but the gruesome splatter is the least of its scares. Actually it is a love story, but the prepubescent kind where sex is a distant idea and loneliness a shared reality. The beauty of Let the Right One In resides in the way the horror remains grounded in a tragic kind of love. The young actors, Kare Hedebrant and Lina Leandersson (none of’em has previous film experience) giving evocative performances as Oskar and Eli, are so overwhelmingly powerful in their roles that we care for them more than they care for themselves. The best fairy tales always have so much darkness in them. That’s why they resonate so deeply. This is a magnificent film.

I Heart Huckabees

i heart huckabees

What in the Buddha’s name is going on in I Heart Huckabees? There’s a bunch of ideas that don’t stick with you because they don’t stick together. The philosophic notions in I Love Huckabees drown in a weird mixture (an no, it’s NOT experimental) of screwball comedy, absurdist farce and social satire with zingy one-liners. The resulting product is so disjointed it’s hard to tell if Russell dumbed down the film in the hope of garnering a larger audience, or if I Heart Huckabees simply isn’t as smart as it likes to think it is. The all-star cast up on the screen appears to be having so much fun, you wish the movie found a way to let you into the party.

The Prestige

the prestige

The Prestige has just about everything I require in a movie about magicians, except … the Prestige. By describing the structure of a great trick in a movie about a great trick, The Prestige makes a promise it can’t keep. It’s all pretty much brilliant until its third act which is about as convincing as a photo of a cow jumping over the moon. There’s plenty going on but never any real magic – even fickle Scarlett Johansson or David Bowie (haha) can’t change tack.

home

Unfortunately the movie depicts way too much angst, despair and torpidity given the current situation of this whole ecological devastation thing and way too less inspiration, encouragement and appreciation for the incipient change process. The off the mark words, overly concerned voice dubbing and like totally embarrassing soundtrack are beyond good and evil and turn the movie into a laughing matter. But due to its breathtaking drop-dead gorgeous imagery, it’s actually pretty great if you turn off the sound though.
